The CellSearch™ Circulating Tumor Cell Test identifies circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with metastatic breast, colorectal and prostate cancer throughout the continuum of care.
Serial testing and monitoring of CTCs, used in conjunction with a physical examination, complete medical history and other clinical methods such as imaging, provide the most accurate assessment of disease status.
- CellSearch predicts disease progression and regression at any time during therapy
- Changes in the CTC counts can be observed as early as the first cycle of treatment
- CTC counts can help physicians evaluate patient prognosis earlier

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is a cytogenetic technique used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes and has a turnaround time of one to two days.
This branch of cytogenetic analysis is more specific than standard karyotype analysis, enabling analysis of disease-specific abnormalities. Using results from previous testing, specific gene locations can be selected for investigation. FISH is offered for the detection of translocations, microdeletion syndromes, aneuploidy and marker chromosome identification.
Flow cytometry and immunophenotyping are an integral part of leukemia and lymphoma evaluation. A full spectrum of flow cytometry services is available at MPLN.
Traditional cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and molecular assays are available to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of hematologic disorders. Assays for gene rearrangement and mutation analysis, as well as quantitative PCR for minimal residual disease, can be ordered individually or as reflex tests.
For more information about flow cytometry or any other advanced technology performed at MPLN, contact a technical service specialist at 800.932.2943.

Directed by Steve Olsen, MS, the immunohistochemistry (IHC) division at MPLN utilizes advanced diagnostic techniques to evaluate protein expression of cells within tissues. IHC assists in identifying the distribution and localization of biomarkers, aiding in diagnosis and targeted therapy selection.
IHC utilizes enzyme-based reactions in conjunction with mono- or polyclonal antibodies to evaluate protein expression levels and locate sub cellular antigens in tissues.

Directed by Dr. Nicholas Potter, the molecular diagnostic laboratory at MPLN provides testing and consultation in three broad areas of laboratory medicine: oncology, inherited diseases and infectious diseases.
In addition to flow cytometry, cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the molecular diagnostic laboratory provides quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for minimal residual disease detection and therapeutic monitoring, gene sequencing and mutation analysis. All of these technologies are provided within one facility supporting our evidence-based laboratory medicine approach to test selection and disease evaluation using StrataFLEX and consultative servces.
