Chief Operating Officer & Director, Immunohistochemistry Laboratory
Steve Olsen manages all the organizational processes and performance standards for Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Inc. (MPLN) and its subsidiary, Ascendant Medical Laboratory. He also works closely with the executive team to forecast and develop business strategies as the laboratory continues to grow its test menu and services.
Before joining MPLN and Ascendant Medical Laboratory, Olsen was the director of pathology and director of the HPRHS reference laboratory at High Point Regional Health System in High Point, NC for nine years. For the previous 10 years, he was the histology and cytology supervisor at Mary Black Memorial Hospital Laboratory in Spartanburg, SC. He was also a research technologist with the special pathology laboratory for three years at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.
Throughout his career, Olsen has authored and co-authored several articles, including “Conversational Computing” published in Health Data Management in 2004, “Challenges of GYN Cytology” in Advance Magazine for Laboratory Professionals in 2005, and “The Laboratory/EMR Connection” in Medical Laboratory Observer in 2006.
He is certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) in histotechnology and earned his Six Sigma Lean certification at Guilford Technical Community College in 2006. Since 1990, Olsen has been qualified by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) as a histology CAP inspector.
Olsen earned his master’s degree in veterinary parasitology, microbiology and public health from Oklahoma State University and his bachelor’s degree in wildlife science and biology at Utah State University. He was president of the Greater High Point Medical Managers Association, a member of the North Carolina Pathology Managers Association and advisor to the Davidson County Community College’s histotechnology program.
