MPLN Celebrates Laboratory Professionals

Employees at Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Inc. (MPLN) will be among hundreds of thousands of industry professionals celebrating National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week April 18-24.

This nationally recognized week provides an opportunity to celebrate the laboratory profession and educate the public about the important contributions laboratory professionals make to our communities' health.

Laboratory professionals at MPLN perform advanced tests and interpret important medical information that is pivotal to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Using molecular and cytogenetic testing, laboratory personnel can characterize specific types of cancer, diagnose infectious diseases and perform specialized medical genetic testing.

More than 319,000 medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians are employed in the United States. Since the development of this career in the 1920s, laboratory professionals have played a vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. With the rapid development of new tests and increased volume of testing, employment of laboratory workers is expected to grow 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, faster than average for all occupations.

National Medical Laboratory Week began in 1975 under the leadership of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (then the American Society for Medical Technology). In the fall of 2005, National Medical Laboratory Week was changed to National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week to emphasize the people whose expertise is needed in the performance of laboratory testing.  Now, numerous organizations participate in the event as co-sponsors and campaign supporters.
