HPV Testing, Genotyping and Cervical Cancer |
|
Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing in conjunction with a PAP smear is recommended for women age 30 and older. Guidelines also recommend HPV testing as the preferred method of follow-up evaluation for women age 20-30 with ASC-US cytology.
In 2009, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) released a Clinical Update about the use of HPV genotyping following the FDA approval of the Cervista™ genotyping test for HPV 16/18. The ASCCP algorithm focuses on the role of high-risk HPV 16/18 genotyping for healthcare of women 30 years of age and older.

HPV high-risk genotypes 16 and 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer cases worldwide. To identify and differentiate HPV types 16 and 18 from other types, MPLN offers HPV genotyping.
Early detection of progression to cervical cancer may be accomplished when a positive high-risk HPV test is reflexed to HPV genotyping.
