Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpes virus family, is associated with a variety of pathological conditions including infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, the Reed Sternberg cells of Hodgkin's disease and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In HIV patients, EBV demonstrates in primary central nervous system lymphomas and oral hairy leukoplakia lesions.
To detect EBV gene expression, MPLN is utilizing in situ hybridization (ISH) technology to detected EBV virus-encoded RNA (EBER) transcripts, which are concentrated in the nuclei of latently-infected cells. EBER by ISH is performed at MPLN on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues, and the result is very similar to the traditional immunohistochemistry (IHC) slide.
