Breast cancer treatment decisions are usually based on one biopsy of the primary tumor. New research indicates changes in hormonal marker status occur throughout the course of disease. Estrogen (ER) or progesterone (PR) hormone receptor status in breast cancer patients undergoing multiple relapses may require a change in treatment management.
Research presented at European Multidisciplinary Cancer Congress (EMCC) 2011 (Abstract # 5024) by the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm is the first sizeable study to look at receptor status change.
Dr. Lindstrom reported retrospective changes in ER PR status in one third of patients evaluated and 15% changes to HER2 status. These substantial changes are apparent as the tumor progresses and responds to hormonal therapy. Loss of estrogen receptor generally means resistance to hormonal therapy and may adversely affect outcome. Receptor status in cancer has implications for future disease management and repeat biopsy evaluation in relapse could reduce inappropriate or unnecessary therapies.
To detect receptor status in breast cancer patients, MPLN offers breast prognostic testing including ER, PR and HER2 status as well as the CellSearch circulating tumor cell test for disease progression and regression during treatment.
